Johnny's is the place to go after a day at Orchard Beach with the kids or a day at a ball game when you just want to hang out, have a beer on the water, and eat some really GOOD, FRESH, but "basic" Seafood and not feel out of place because you're sweaty, wearing shorts and a ball cap and you or you kids are wearing flip flops and you're all full of sand! I've eaten at those places also and the food is Tremendous, but a completely different thing. Yes! there are fancier places to dine on City Island with fancier food where you will pay at least double the price and most likely have no ocean view.
*Don't worry about seagulls, they have a safe overhead system of lines to keep them away from the tables! We always chose an outside table next to the water. All Bronx, Arthur Avenue, Schuylerville, All Manhattan, Chelsea, Chinatown, East Village, Gramercy Park, Greenwich Village, Harlem, Kips Bay, Lower East Side. I've been there Many times over the years, usually after a summertime day game at Yankee Stadium. You pay as you go as you would at any "fast food place" grab your tray and find a table. Wine and Cold beer as well as fountain soft drinks. they've got a Raw Bar for Oysters, Clams, etc. Your choice of Fried or Steamed plus a choice of a couple of sides like corn on the cob, fries or cole slaw. I rate Johnny's Reef Five Stars, NOT because I consider it a "5 Star Restaurant", but because it offers the Best possible version of What -It- Is! A No Frills Place where you walk up to a counter and order your choice of a variety.
